Why is specialized "fall-protection flooring" needed?
For seniors, the floor is the most hidden hazard in the home. Ordinary tiles and wooden flooring only provide a 'flat and attractive' surface, but offer no help in two critical moments: first, whenthe floor is wet and slippery(bathrooms, kitchens, and corridors on rainy days); and second,in the event of a fall. Hard floors reflect almost all of the impact force of a fall back onto the body. With decreased bone density in seniors, the hips and wrists are highly susceptible to injury upon impact.
Senior fall-protection flooring is designed specifically for these two moments: it increases friction to reduce slip hazards during daily use, and provides cushioning through its elastic structure if a fall occurs.
What is it made of?
Typical senior fall-protection flooring features a composite structure:
- Surface layer: Textured or embossed with anti-slip patterns or particles to increase friction in both dry and wet conditions; some designs feature wood grain or other decorative effects.
- Elastic cushioning layer: Made of soft rubber/foamed material that deforms to absorb energy during a fall, which is the core of its cushioning capability.
- Base layer: Provides stable support and facilitates installation (interlocking tiles or full-spread installation).
Three Core Performance Features
1. Slip Resistance
Measured by anti-slip ratings (such as R-value) and coefficient of friction, with a key focus onwet conditionsperformance—many tiles are not slippery when dry, but become very slick when wet.
2. Cushioning (Impact Absorption)
AnchorCare classifies products into 1A/2A/3A ratings based on product structure and usage scenarios: 1A corresponds to the L1 Bathroom Mat and the Xingji Half Anti-slip Mat / Xingji Full Anti-slip Mat; 2A corresponds to the S1 Beijixing and the Quantum Stack; 3A corresponds to the S3 Xingyao, the S2 Xingmang and the Fall-cushion System. Age, bone density, and care risk serve only as references for project zoning.
3. Antibacterial & Easy to Clean
Seniors' homes, nursing homes, and hospitals have high hygiene standards. Practical considerations include easy cleaning and maintenance, washable seams, and individually replaceable tiles. Specific antibacterial conclusions are subject to the corresponding test reports.
Difference from Ordinary Flooring (In one sentence)
Ordinary flooring addresses whether it 'looks good and is flat'; senior fall-protection flooring addresses whether it 'slips, cushions the impact of falls, and is easy to maintain.' Since they serve different purposes, the latter should be prioritized in senior-friendly environments.
