What is the R10 Anti-slip Rating?

R10 is one of the internationally recognized floorslip-resistance ratings, ranging from R9 to R13, where a higher number indicates greater slip resistance. R10 represents good slip-resistant capability, often used in water-prone areas such as bathrooms and corridors, and is a common target rating for senior-friendly wet area flooring.

How are R ratings determined?

R ratings (R9–R13) originate from the German DIN 51130 ramp test: testers wear standard footwear and walk on an oil-coated surface. The angle of inclination is gradually increased until they slip, and the rating is classified accordingly. The steeper the slope before slipping occurs, the higher the rating.

Which R rating do elderly floors need?

For age-friendly scenarios:

AnchorCare Xingji Full Anti-slip Mat reaches R10 rating and maintains friction in wet conditions through its drainage structure, designed specifically for wet areas such as bathrooms.

Is looking at the R rating enough?

Not enough. The R rating only measures slip resistance. Floors for the elderly also need to consider cushioning (fall protection). The ideal ismeeting slip resistance standards + cushioning, and combining both provides a complete age-friendly floor.

FAQ

Are R10 and BPN the same thing?

No. R-value is derived from the ramp oil-wet test method, while BPN (British Pendulum Number) comes from the pendulum friction test. Both are indicators for measuring slip resistance from different perspectives, and they can be cross-referenced.

Does a home bathroom have to be R10?

It is recommended that wet areas reach R10 or higher. If seniors have a history of falls or mobility issues, slip resistance in wet areas should be prioritized.

Is a higher R rating always better?

Not necessarily. A higher rating typically means a coarser texture, which may reduce comfort and cleanability. Simply select the appropriate rating based on the requirements of each area; R10 is usually sufficient for residential wet areas.
